PBO presents beautiful music from 17th-century Italy (il seicento) when the violin became the soprano voice of instrumental music, alongside the cornetto (the most virtuoso of early brass) and flauto dolce (recorder). Some of Bachs most beautiful music appears in his hundreds of sacred cantatas. Monica builds the program around the virtuoso violin concerto in D minor, whose music also appears in Cantata 146. Four vocalists, one on a part, and a small string ensemble will perform intimate cantatas featuring solo violin and oboe, much as they were first performed in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where Bach was director of music for nearly 30 years. December 22 (sold out) and 23 (sold out), 2007
Monica Huggett brings her decades of experience with Handel's masterpiece back to Portland for the first time in ten years. Following her triumphant success last season with Handel's Messiah in Dublin (the city of its premiere), Monica will lead PBO, Cappella Romana, and an exciting new roster of soloists in a rousing performance of the complete oratorio, about three hours in length.
PBO's Messiah sold out early in 2006 -- act now and reserve the best seats for this Portland holiday tradition!

This program lasts about two hours. November 17, 2007
Share your passion for PBO with the next generation by bringing the children you love to a one-hour program created just for them. This young people’s concert will feature Mozart’s First Symphony (written when he was just 9 years old!) and other short works. Portland has known and loved Richard Egarr for years, and now, the newly appointed director of England’s Academy of Ancient Music returns to PBO for his first fortepiano performances with us. Come hear young Portland pianists Stephanie Kai, Eloise Kim, and Rosa Li perform music by Mozart and Beethoven. Master teacher Richard Egarr coaches these young talents on period performance techniques. No reservations or tickets required; space is limited and doors open at 6:45pm.
Made possible in part by the Oregon Cultural Trust and the PBO Expanded Repertoire Fund, with grants from the Collins Foundation and Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust.
This event is free to the public. October 19, 20, and 21, 2007
Monica never ceases to astound with her performances of Vivaldi – be it one of the Four Seasons or an unknown masterpiece. Always ready for new challenges, Monica debuts solo violin concertos from one of Vivaldi’s last published volumes (1729-30). You’ll also see PBO violinists take center stage playing double concertos from Vivaldi’s rich Opus 3 (1711).
