In Vivaldi's time, there were two kinds of
flutes - the transverse, held like the modern flute - and the "sweet flute," or flauto dolce in Italian, which we call the recorder. Guest soloist Matthias Maute from Germany will
explore the sweet tones of this ancient instrument

For a unique night of period chamber music, Monica Huggett teams up with cellist Tanya Tomkins and early keyboard specialist Eric Zivian. Zivian will perform on his own 1841 Viennese piano, much like one Mendelssohn would have played, shipped to Portland specifically for these performances. A celebration of PBO's 25th Anniversary with Monica Huggett and Richard Egarr together on stage for the first time--only in Portland and only with PBO. The concert of music by Mozart includes Monica's vivacious interpretation of Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Richard's dazzling fortepiano work, and his professional debut on timpani (!) for the unique Serenata Notturna. For PBO's second young people's concert, Monica Huggett will introduce inquisitive minds to dances and songs played for knights and queens in palaces and gardens on ancient instruments over 400 years old. The performance lasts about an hour, and includes works from Italy's Seicento.
